Armadillo - the beast

You simply have to like Armadillos. They are very adaptive and masters in the art of surviving. Their bizzare look with the characteristic bony carapace makes them very popular in the area of their distribution.

Armadillos can grow to about the size of a terrier dog. They live in South and Central America and in the South of the USA. There, their ecological function is that of the hedgehog in Europe. They are mostly active during the night. They feed on insects and their larvae, but don't reject small amphibia, berries, fruit or bird eggs.

Armadillos are fond of water and tend to make their dens along streams and rivers. Due to their heavy carapace, they have a hard time to swim. However, the animals may ingest air, inflate themselves and thus increase their buoyancy, which allows them to cross even larger rivers.
